Welcome to Maidstone Mela

THE MAIDSTONE MELA 2008 WILL TAKE PLACE ON SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 14 AT MOTE PARK BETWEEN 1PM AND 7PM

The Maidstone Mela is organised in partnership by Maidstone Borough Council and North West Kent Racial Equality Council. The Mela is part funded by the Arts Council.

The Mela is a celebration of the diversity of the borough through music, food and dance. The Mela has a truly international theme with stalls preparing, cooking and selling their national and regional cuisine as well as displaying crafts and national dress. On the stage there is full programme of culturally diverse entertainment. The Mela brings together partner agencies, community groups, local schools and charities to celebrate the diversity of the borough and promote community cohesion.

Highlights of the stage programme will include the Congo Action Group, Morris Dancers, Scottish Dancers local school performances amongst others. This year there will be 2 stages at the Mela for the first time and will feature a world renowned headline act Voulez Vous.

Voulez Vous, the world's greatest ABBA show, comes to the Maidstone Mela Brilliantly performing the story of ABBA, both musically and visually.

Voulez Vous have now been performing the world's greatest ABBA production for over eighteen years and still command immense audience support and appreciation.

Their new production; ABBA The Story has received fantastic reviews from theatres and audiences alike. Some of the new costumes for the up and coming season are more glamorous than ever, adding to the authenticity of the show and combining that 70's look also defines the humour and personality of the Voulez Vous cast.

Voulez Vous perform a non-stop barrage of ABBA hits, brilliantly performed and also visually enhanced by multi screen projection and voice over narration telling the story of ABBA's rise to stardom to their eventual split. A comment from one theatre goer was "Voulez Vous create a musical and visual atmosphere only surpassed by ABBA themselves."

AFROVIA means a journey via Africa! Afrovia was born out of a passion for cultural ‘African' music and a desire to share the powerful effects that the rhythms contained in this music can have on peoples' lives. Everyone in the group shares that passion and a true belief in the power of change through creativity.

Our group's name reflects our desire to inspire people about Africa through our music. This can be felt in the simple melodies which you'll find yourself humming to long after you've heard us. 50% of the group comprises of young people from across East and Central Africa.

With a 12 band set, Afrovia produces a fusion of distinct African sounds with a mix of Afro-contemporary music. The music is deeply rooted in African tradition and culture but the message is universal. The sound and rhythm of the music brings to life the vibrancy of Africa to the hearts of those who hear it.
